Martuwarra Mana Yongu: Marnin Studio Returns to Country to Couture
The launch marks an important moment for the Studio. Martuwarra Mana Yongu is the first collection Marnin Studio has presented as part of Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair since the devastating Fitzroy Valley floods and brings together work from 10 artists connected with the Studio.
The collection draws on the creativity, knowledge and connection to Country of Fitzroy Valley women, translating these into contemporary textiles and fashion.
Taking the collection to the Country to Couture runway provided an opportunity to share this work with audiences from across Australia and celebrate the extraordinary creative practice continuing to emerge from the Fitzroy Valley.
The response to Martuwarra Mana Yongu was wonderful, and seeing the collection move from the Studio in Fitzroy Crossing to the runway in Darwin was a proud moment for everyone involved.
Behind the finished garments has been an enormous collective effort. Artists, makers, Studio staff, collaborators and supporters have all contributed to bringing the collection to life.
For Marnin Studio, fashion is also about creating pathways for women to share their work, build skills and economic opportunities, strengthen connection and take the stories and creativity of the Fitzroy Valley to new audiences.
Martuwarra Mana Yongu represents another step in that journey.
